“Do you have a blog on your website? And if not, why??”
This is the first question I ask clients who come to me for content support, and surprisingly the answer is often, “No, I don’t have a blog.”
My response is always: “Then let’s think about starting a blog, ASAP!”
Because, if you want to…
… you need a blog.
I’ve been writing blogs since 2010!
I do it because I love writing and having a place to do that is a way for me to stay creative and enjoy creating content in my business. All the other benefits of having a blog make the time I spend writing absolutely worth it.
The first ever blog made its appearance in 1994 at Links.net. The term “weblog” came about in 1997 and was changed to “blog” in 1999. The first platforms for blogging were Live Journal & Blogger which is where I got my start blogging. (You can learn more here: The History of Blogging)
Essentially a blog is a collection of writing found on a website. The heyday of blogging was during the 2000s, which also introduced us to monetization & WordPress (you’re reading this blog on the WordPress platform!).
If you have a website you probably have the ability to create a blog. If you don’t have a website, you can use platforms like LinkedIn, Medium, or Substack to create blog/newsletter hybrids to distribute your long-form written content to a larger audience.
Blogs make use of SEO (search engine optimization) to bring traffic from Google (or other search engines) to your website. There is a strategy for doing this, but in a nutshell, you want to use terms your ideal audience would be searching for in your title & headlines. My blog brought the same amount of people to my website as my IG feed did in the last 12 months.
If you’re a busy entrepreneur with limited time for content creation, your blog can be an ongoing source of content to share on platforms like Instagram & Pinterest. This is a task that can be easily passed on to a VA (click here to book a clarity call with me to see how I can support you with this). All you have to focus on every week is writing a blog post about a topic your audience wants to learn about.
This should be reason enough to write a blog. You have something important to say and as much as you try, the short-form content on social media will never do your brilliance justice. Yeah, you could start another podcast and potentially use your blog to promote your audio content… but podcasts are TWICE as much work as a blog (if not more). You’ve got to write, record, edit, upload, write the show notes, and then promote it. With a blog, you write the content and find a good picture to go with it and that’s all you really need to do. The thought leadership you establish with your blog means you can be a GUEST on podcasts getting yourself IN FRONT of aligned audiences more often. This is visibility gold.
And before you say, “But, I’m not a good writer”… I’d just like to remind you that Grammarly, Virtual Assistants who are AMAZING with proofreading (thanks Cassandra!!), and copy editors exist (Sam at Cult of Personality has an amazing offer to help you with this) to help you with your writing. Over time your writing WILL improve.
Your ability to communicate your ideas WELL is a gift for your business and the people who are looking for what you offer. Don’t let your fear of writing poorly get in the way – just write and ask for help to improve your writing.
My team can help you with your blog. We’ll help you strategize your blog content, help you come up with ideas, proofread your writing, get your blog posted, and develop content for your social media that establishes you as the thought leader you are AND drives aligned traffic to your website.
