Why Good Copywriting is Easier Than You Think

“But, what does it mean? Why should this matter to me?”

I think everyone’s copy & content writing would improve if they asked themselves these questions before posting anything.

To be clear, I’m not talking about grammar or having perfect sentence structure (there’s Grammarly for that).

I’m talking about writing in a way that makes your ideal client pay attention.

You might even be an amazing writer, but if your audience doesn’t feel understood or like you can help them, your copy isn’t going to help you make sales or grow your business. That’s because good copy is less about the aesthetic and more about the message. Everything you write for your business can and should serve a purpose. That purpose is to paint a picture of who you are and why you’re perfectly suited to help your ideal client with what you do.

Here are five things you can do today to improve your copy:

1. Get to know your ideal client really well – either this person is a former version of you, or you’ve taken time to talk to your ideal clients in order to understand who they are and what they want. This knowledge is the foundation of everything you’ll write for your business.
2. Plan your content & sales copy – take time to map out what you want to say and when you want to say it. If you’re planning a launch – get really strategic about your copy 3 months before your cart opens. Think about how each piece of copy relates to your work & your offers.
3. When you finish a piece of copy – read it from the perspective of your ideal client. Would they understand what you’re saying and be able to relate to it? Will what you’re saying matter to them? Why does it matter?
4. Meet your prospective clients where they are right now. We tend to write from our current perspective using concepts and ideas that only people who’ve been in our spaces a while understand. Writing in this way may alienate those who aren’t familiar with our work. Using language that your future clients are using right now (or words/phrases they are searching on Google) will get their attention – once they’re listening or in your programs you can introduce new concepts and ideas to them. People make spending decisions based on feeling understood and as though you can help them.
5. Ditch the formalities. Copywriting doesn’t have to be formal writing – contractions, slang, & emojis are all allowed/encouraged if your ideal client speaks this way. Connection is key and writing in an engaging and casual way is a great way to connect with your audience.

Don’t stress about it, your writing doesn’t have to be Jane Austen quality – it just has to be CLEAR and your client needs to know that you’ve got their back.
